Introducing the Preferences Filter

The Global Sustainable Investment Alliance highlighted in their most recent review that exclusionary screening is the largest sustainable investment strategy used today, accounting for $19.8 trillion in assets, followed closely by ESG integration at $17.5 trillion in assets.

At S-Ray we acknowledge that there is no one definition of sustainability for all - it means different things to different people, corporations, and countries. To that end, the new S-Ray Preferences Filter takes a flexible approach to screening that allows each and every individual to fine-tune the filter and align with their precise values.

The new Preferences Filter is the perfect complement to the S-Ray ESG, GC and Temperature scores, providing individuals with a full toolkit to incorporate both exclusionary screening and ESG integration into their responsible investing process.

How does it work?

Revenue breakdown

The revenue breakdown data tracks reported company revenue from financial statements and 10-K reports.

Revenue filter

Revenue associated with each business segment is calculated, and an allowed revenue threshold is set.

how does it work

The standard preference filters flag companies that are over a 5% revenue threshold or that have recorded involvement in each business segment. Customised versions of the filters are also available.

Business involvement

The business involvement data tracks products and services sold by companies as reported on company websites or in company reports and presentations

Involvement filter

Company involvement associated with each business segment can be toggled on and off.

Specialised Filters

In addition to the filters described above, S-Ray is able to build specialised filters for individual sustainability preferences. Whether this is as simple as altering the threshold on a revenue screen, or as complex as developing a whole toolkit, we are happy to explore ways in which we can accommodate your requirements. Our current offerings include the Controversial Weapons and Catholic Filters. For more information please contact your S-Ray sales representative or get in touch at s-ray@arabesque.com

Case Studies

tobacco

Tobacco

Case study: the tobacco giant

A tobacco company reports 88% of revenues from the production of Cigarettes and 9% from the production of Other Tobacco Products. It also reports the final 3% of revenues from Wineries.

With the threshold set at 5%, the company receives a 1 for the Tobacco Filter, but a 0 for the Alcohol Filter.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Case study: the restaurant group

A restaurant reports 92% of its revenues from Food and Beverage Services and 8% of its revenues from General Merchandise. The restaurant does not directly report revenue from alcohol related sales so cannot be excluded based on an alcohol related revenue threshold. However, the restaurant states on its website that it has a business agreement with a leading beer manufacturer, X.

With the Preferences Filter set to account for Business Involvements this company will receive a value of 1 for the Alcohol Filter.
